Kellar, our Toronto Cat Rescue Foster Cat
At the end of May 2009, we (as a household) agreed to foster a lovely 12 year old Turkish van kitty named Boo Boo. You can read the full story of how this guy ended up in foster care and see a photo of him hiding here.
Needless to say, we’ve changed his name from Boo Boo to Kellar. Which is German for ‘basement’, or where he spent the first six months he was here hiding. In the ceiling (until we were able to nail a board over the little whole), behind the furnace, in shelving units. You name it, he was able to hide in it, under it, behind it. So we moved his food and water downstairs and gave him the time and space he needed to feel comfortable.
Right before we left for Asia (so the beginning of October), we started to make some breakthroughs. I was able to pet him and then to lure him out from hiding for some lovin’. While we were traveling we got some updates from the house. He was starting to come out. By the time we got home he had started sleeping under my roommate’s bed (and sometimes on it at night!).
Kellar just took a little bit longer to warm up. Which isn’t unexpected given how big the change was in his life (from a cramped apartment with 8 cats, 6 dogs, and the same person his entire life to a bigger house, lots of people coming and and going, and a whole new group of animals to learn about). But he’s done it!
Last night I was sitting in the living room with the dog and all four cats (two are mine, one is my roommate’s, and then there’s Kellar). Sadly, I couldn’t get a picture because had I moved I would have changed the dynamics and everyone would have fled. Its a big step for us because it means that they can get along! Here’s a photo of him lying on the dog’s blanket and looking pretty pleased with himself for getting some attention.
A little while later, he strolled back in to get loving from both myself and my roommate. Even going so far as to jump from couch to couch to switch things up!
He is a handsome gentleman. His fur has gone from grey/yellow and dingy to sparkling white. He’s proven that he can come out of his shell and that he loves attention (trust me, he’ll flying headbutt you if you aren’t fast enough with the pets). He’s still looking for his forever home – could it be yours?

omg he’s precious! look at his paws!
I fostered two turkish vans back in Florida. BOTH would get in the bathtub with me if I didn’t pay attention. They love the water and would often get in my tub and howl until I filled it a few inches deep.
He’s a handsome devil, sorry I didn’t get to meet him yesterday. Love that hat/mask combo he’s wearing, very batman-esque!
