Rogers Sucks: Text Messaging to the States
I know that I’ve vented a lot lately about this change and how the implementation has been handled. I received my monthly bill this week. I sent 386 messages to the States (which is about average), but for the sake of back of envelope math let’s assume an even 400 messages. Previously these were included as part of the 2,500 sent texts I get through my $20 communicate value pack. Now, they are considered a pay per use service and charged at a rate of $0.25 per message. This means that on average I would now be paying an extra $100 per month to send 400 text messages.
To put this in perspective, I use about 1,700 minutes of talk time per month and pay $39 for the privilege, which works out to $0.023 per minute. If I include my communicate value pack I’m paying $60 per month for my entire service (ignoring taxes and the systems access fee), which works out to $0.035 per minute.
Anyone out there care to explain why 160 characters of text costs 1087% more then a minute of airtime ($0.25 per message / $0.023 per minute)? Or why Rogers thinks that as a customer I’d accept an increase of 167% over my typical monthly bill ($100/$60) for something that: a) used to be included as part of my service, and b) is 400 text messages?
