Root Beer Challange – Journey Historic Brew FAIL
What do you do on a rainy Monday morning? Well, we wanted to try our hand at another root beer challenge taste test. Its another paired match off, as we had two bottles by the same company. They don’t seem to have an active website (the one listed on the bottles leads to a placeholder), so we weren’t able to tell you anything more about ‘em.
Today our contenders are Journey’s John Barleycorn Root Beer and Journey’s Desert Sage Root Beer. In my head, this sounds like a wrestling announcer is doing his thing.
John Barleycorn Root Beer (nutty malty foamy):
- sweetener – natural sweetener mix, fructose, pure natural cane sugar (really, three? what’s up with that?)
- no real smell, which is strange
- tastes like medicine. in a bad way. in fact, it may be worse than buckley’s
Desert Sage Root Beer (rich herbal):
- sweetener – natural sweetener mix, fructose, pure natural cane sugar
- smells like spices/herbs
- not as terrible as the barleycorn, but still bad
Basically, these two were bad enough that we couldn’t even drink them. Thankfully we had some awesome vegan chewy chocolate chip cookies that Jason baked last night to cleanse our palates.
Let’s put it this way, the President’s Choice Old Fashioned Root Beer we had leftover from our board game was in a whole separate class from Journey’s attempts at brews. And its a control label brand. I guess it explains why the website is no longer active…

yeah. ew… I got some Lowes Foods brand(local food store) root beer last week and I was stunned at how good it was! It was sweet and creamy with a thick creamy head and you could taste the winter green spice flavors. I swear I tasted nutmeg.
Not on par with some of the bottled stuff, but far and again surpassing any store brand I’ve experienced. I just wish they sold it in glass bottles I hate plastic and cans.
