Round peg in a Square Hole

I’ve been struggling over the last few days with an assignment for school. Not with the concepts or ideas or the thought process. No, that’s the easy part! I’ve been struggling with trying to fit my thoughts into the framework we’ve been given to present our work: two slides for this, three for this, one for your conclusion, etc. Where’s the room for our own logic or creativity? The assignment teaches us the concept, but I think that we are missing a much more valuable lesson – how to structure and present our own idea. Because once we’re out of this supposed coddled environment and working in that big, scary real world we’ll have to know how to think for ourselves. My framework and logic just don’t fit with what I’ve been asked to do. I’m the round peg in a very square system.

Except that I like being the round peg. Life inside my head is way more fun. I was having a conversation with a friend last night. I forget exactly what led up to this exchange (which is unfortunate), but the gist was that I was deliberating mixing up lessons from the bible. “Jesus turned fish into wine”. Gagging noises on the other end of the phone ensued (sorry!). Apparently this is a particular vile mental image. I imagined vinegar with an oily layer on top. This had me chuckling all of today. Fish into wine. Classic.

Misinterpretations are a source of fresh ideas. My misunderstanding of the instructions on your webpage is your opportunity to provide a better customer experience. My experience is that corporations don’t like kids like me because we challenge the system. How else do you expect to move forward and innovate? My main motivation is that I know it can be better and I’m willing to put in the extra time to get us there if you’ll let me.
