The Great Root Beer Challenge of 2010

Jason lovesĀ  root beer and through him I’ve been introduced to the subtleties and nuances of some good brew. Off the top of my head, we’ve had Dr. Pepper, Dr. Pepper 10-2-4, A&W, Barqs, Virgils, IBC, Boylans, Frostop, Draft Root Beer, and some awesome locally made stuff from Iron Hill Brewery in Delaware. We’ve had root beer in cans, plastic bottles, glass bottles, and even some draft! Basically, we love root beer.

Sometime this summer I heard about Soda Pop Central in Whitby, Ontario. We kept meaning to take a short road trip out to visit, but our timing was always a little off and we never made it out. However, it turned out that a friend was heading out that way anyway so he offered to pick us up some. We asked for one bottle of every kind they had available.

Fast forward to our return from Asia. Our friend had picked up root beer in October and was finally able to get it out of his car trunk on Boxing Day! I’m thankful that you all had a relatively warm fall otherwise he would have had a trunk full of broken glass and frozen root beer. Jozef came by to drop it off – and it turns out that he had more than 40 bottles of root beer for our drinking pleasure (it came out to around $90).

With this much root beer, I didn’t want to just waste it and drink it all in one go. Instead, we’re setting up the great root beer challenge of 2010. Which really just means that we’re going to review each brand as we drink it – so expect regular posts on what we’re tasting, pictures, and maybe even some background on the company. We’ve admittedly already drank the brands that we’ve tried out before (we couldn’t resist dipping into the stash a little bit), but we do have two bottles chillin’ out in the fridge to report back on this evening.

man.. colour me jealous! root beer is my hands down favorite soda. Few non-chocolate things compare with a root beer float.

I went on a family road trip to Boston when I was a kid and my parents took us on a tour of a brewery that at the end offered adults a mug of beer and kids a mug of root beer, home made. It was the best thing I have ever drunk in my life!
